Construction workers repairing part of the road on Highway 175 between Highway 167 and Pleasant Hill Road hit a natural gas line just after 12 p.m. Wednesday.
“There was a huge gushing sound and the smell of gas in the air,” resident Mike Kennard said. “I came outside and the construction workers were telling me to get out.”
Residents within a .75 mile radius were evacuated as a precaution.
A few homeowners took shelter inside the nearby bowling alley.
A We Energies spokesperson said the line was capped at 2:04 p.m.
Around 3 p.m., residents were escorted back into their homes.
12 gas and 15 electric customers were impacted by the leak.
