ELKHORN -- Dozens of emergency calls had to be made to help residents in Elkhorn Wednesday.

Despite all the warnings, people took the gamble and drove through closed roadways throughout the city.

Law enforcement says it's dangerous to drive through standing water because you do not know if the road is washed out.

Elkhorn police say they were flooded with calls from stranded drivers.

"Stalled vehicles in the roadway. [We've been] putting up barricades to try to keep people from going through it," said Joe Kirkpatrick with the Elkhorn Police Department.

The officer warns never to take the chance and drive through standing water covering the roadway. He says remember the saying "Turn around, don't drown."
