Elementary students ditch desks for a forest

Remember those last Sun filled days when you were in school, just before summer break?

If you were lucky, there was always one awesome educator who understood how motivating a trip outdoors could be.

Some Greenfield students have hit the jackpot!

Over the past few days, all of the elementary students in the district have ditched their desks for a forest. The forest is a part of Whitnall high school's outdoor classroom.

Laura Cerletty a science coordinator and teacher says, “Having to teach the lesson, they’re learning more about their topic.  That’s the key here.  That’s why we chose these students, give them an opportunity to actually teach what they’ve learned.”

As it turns out, all of the advanced placement students have some time on their hands after the AP tests were over in early May.  So they've taken the motto, “each one,  teach one,”  to heart.

Graduating Senior Seth Weis  says, “It’s just really fun that we get this opportunity to teach the young kids and kind of show what we’ve learned at the high school level and kind of explain to them and almost mentor them about what they’re going to be doing later on.”

And when you're in fifth grade, learning from someone headed for college can be kind of cool.

Especially in this environment.

It's all pretty inspiring for the visiting grade schoolers, something for them to look forward to, just a few years away when they’ll be the ones to take the lead and encourage the next generation.
