MILWAUKEE -- For the next week, temperatures in southeastern Wisconsin are going to drop to a dangerous level with wind chills touching as low as -35 F. degrees on Friday.
In order to stay safe in these potentially harmful conditions, consider these eight items when preparing for the cold weather.
1) If you need to use a space heater, remember the three-feet rule. Stay at least three-feet away from the heater to avoid getting burned. Place the heater on a hard, non-flammable surface and move all rugs, curtains and other flammable objects out of the way. Most importantly, turn it off when you leave the house.
2) Don't warm up your car while it's unattended. Although this may seem convenient for you, it's also convenient for thieves to steal it while you're pre-occupied.
3) Keep your thermostat at a constant temperature that is above 55 degrees so your pipes don't freeze.
4) Watch out for your pets. Make sure to let them inside after a short amount of time, despite their fur coats. If you are walking them, make sure they don't ingest antifreeze off the ground. Many people use antifreeze to melt ice or snow, but it is dangerous if ingested.
5) Make sure the roads are safe for travel and leave early with plenty of time. Also, check travel times before you leave here.
6) Watch for hypothermia. Hypothermia is likely to begin in your feet and hands. Wear thick socks or multiple pairs if going outside.
7) Keep a list of all utility contact information. If your power, heat or water goes out, make sure you know who to call immediately.
8) Stay up-to-date on the weather. Follow Storm Team 4 for all impending weather circumstances. They will keep you updated on the degree of concern for the weather.
