GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay 9/11 memorial was decommissioned Monday, 16 years after the terrorist attacks.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt, the Green Bay Police Department and the Green Bay Metro Fire Department were all on hand to participate in the decommissioning.

The memorial has deteriorated over time and needs to be replaced, the police department said.

"We could do better," Mayor Jim Schmitt said of the memorial.

Honor guards from both Green Bay Police and Green Bay Metro Fire presented the colors and removed the girder, which will be stored at the police department.

There was also a moment of silence to honor the fallen police officers, firefighters and victims of the September 11 attacks.
