MADISON (AP) — Assembly Democrats say their Republican counterparts won't take up a resolution recognizing Black History Month.

Minority Leader Gordon Hintz told reporters Tuesday that he's disappointed the resolution isn't coming to the floor.

Majority Leader Jim Steineke said Republicans are trying to work with Democrats on a list of black figures to honor in the resolution. He said one hang-up is whether to include former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who began kneeling for the national anthem to protest racial injustice in 2016.

Last year's Black History Month resolution ran into similar hurdles in the Assembly after Republican Rep. Scott Allen, who is white, complained the resolution honored only a select group of black leaders rather than all black Wisconsinites.

The chamber ultimately passed two resolutions, one written by black lawmakers and one written by Allen.
