CALEDONIA, Wis. -- A bike night takes a deadly turn for a father cycling Highway 32 in Caledonia with his son.
It happened Friday night just before 10 pm in the Village of Caledonia.
According to police, the 39-year-old father (who’s name has not yet been released) was cycling southbound on the highway while his 15-year-old son rode on the sidewalk alongside him. The driver hit the dad then left the scene leaving pieces of his car behind.
“It just threw me off," Lonnie Hordyk said. "I just couldn’t believe that it happened right here."
Lonnie Hordyk lives in Caledonia near the highway and has done so for about 45 years. She said she’s seen and heard of a lot of things in her neighborhood, but nothing quite like this.
“I’ve never really heard of other accidents for I don’t know how long in this area," Hordyk said. "That’s why I was really surprised when [this] happened."
When police arrived a few people were doing CPR on the father, but to no avail. He was taken to a hospital in Racine where he later died from his injuries.
With the assistance of the Racine Police Department, the offending vehicle and the driver were located. The driver, a Racine man, was taken into custody for Hit and Run – causing Death.
The vehicle was later impounded at the Caledonia Police Department. The accident investigation is still underway and the Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting with the reconstruction of the incident.
