MILWAUKEE -- County Executive Chris Abele announced Friday that the bathrooms in his office will be gender neutral, effective immediately.

"I want Milwaukee County to be a welcoming place for everyone, regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, religion, or what gender they identify with," Abele said.

The new rule? Use whichever restroom you feel comfortable in. The new policy applies only to the county executive's office, however.

"Passing laws about who can use which bathroom is not only a mean-spirited and discriminatory intrusion on the rights of transgender individuals to fully participate in society, it is a tremendous waste of time and energy," Abele added.

In a statement, Abele said he looks forward to partnering with the County Board and other interested partners to make the County's other facilities more inclusive.
