MILWAUKEE — The City of Milwaukee is offering millions of dollars in tax incentives to Molson Coors following its decision to relocate hundreds of jobs from Colorado to Milwaukee.
On Monday CEO Gavin Hattersley along with Governor Tony Evers and Mayor Tom Barrett visited Miller Brewery to discuss the big move.
Last month the corporation announced that it's retiring the MillerCoors name. Starting January 1, 2020, it will now be called the Molson Coors Brewing Company.
"Milwaukee will play an even larger part in our future,” Hattersley said.
Hattersley promises a positive impact on the City of Milwaukee as the corporation undergoes a major revitalization. He said that is especially the case when it comes to jobs.
Exact numbers remain unclear, but Hattersley said Milwaukee will see a gain in jobs. He said there may be a few jobs that move to Chicago, but the net gain in Milwaukee will be in the hundreds.
Hattersley said the jobs will be in areas like tech, finance, and human resources.
"These are family-supporting jobs with great benefits,” Governor Evers said.
Mayor Barrett plans to propose $2 million in tax incremental financing, provided Molson Coors adds new workers and keeps those currently working at the brewery.
His plan would require Molson Coors to use certified small businesses for at least 25 percent of office renovations, and 40 percent or more of labor hours will have to be by certified workers under the city's residential preference program.
As a result, businesses and workers who aren’t even employed by Molson Coors would benefit from the changes.
"We want to ensure that the people who live in this community and sometimes literally in this neighborhood are helping to build the future of this city,” Mayor Barrett said.
"It's a win for Wisconsin, a win for the business,” Governor Evers said.
The mayor's proposal will ultimately need approval by the common council.
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is also in the process of working on tax credits for the new employees.
The company has asked the employees to move here in June.
