Roughly 300 shotgun-wielding gun enthusiasts took aim at childhood cancer Friday afternoon at the Waukesha Gun Club.
Christopher’s Shoot Against Childhood Cancer has become a successful fundraiser for Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC.)
The event is named for Christopher Schraufnagel who died five years ago from an aggressive brain tumor. Christopher was only 8-years-old when he passed. His parents helped him launch Christopher’s Shoot before he died as his goal was to “kick cancer’s booty.”
In the six years of Christopher’s Shoot, the event has increased exponentially. Last year, participants raised $150,000 for the MACC Fund.
The boy’s parents see the event as a fitting legacy for their spirited boy.
“We miss him every day,” said Christopher’s father, Pete Schraufnagel. “There isn’t day that goes by that we don’t think about him, but you know the amount of money that’s been raised here gives Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Hospital the ability to try new treatments and to work toward our goal of curing cancer.”
As of Friday night, it was unclear how much money was raised by the event. The Schraufnagels and their 40 volunteers were optimistic they would surpass last year’s total.
