Can this patch stop drunk driving?

Patch senses alcohol intake through sweat

A New Mexico company is hoping their new patch will help stop drunk driving.

DermaTec has developed a patch that senses alcohol intake through sweat. It's called the ONUSBlue, as in it's "on us" to end drunk driving.

"Let's say you go out with your friends. You put it on and start to have some drinks. It changes color, after about 40 minutes, that color designates you're not longer good to be a designated driver," says DermaTec CEO Anh-Duong Le.

Once they do, they hope to work with bars, restaurants and companies to make customized ones. For example, a bar could get a fun, branded patch for a designated driver and check it when they're on their way out the door.

"We're not saying don't drink. We're just saying drink responsibly," co-founder Julia Jones says. "If you choose to drink, get a designated driver, get a hero for the night, or an Uber driver."
