A Burlington man is facing charges after attempting to strangle his wife and poison her with Visine eye drops, according to a criminal complaint.

46-year-old Darin Tiedt has been charged with strangulation and suffocation, misdemeanor battery, disorderly conduct, as well as placing foreign objects in edibles.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to Tiedt's Burlington home on Monday March 12 for a domestic complaint. When they arrived, Tiedt's wife told police that she noticed her husband put something into her Diet Coke.

"When she confronted him he stated it was only water, [she] took a drink and then immediately spit out the drink," the complaint reads. That's when Tiedt's wife says he grabbed her by the throat and "squeezed for approximately 20 seconds."

The victim later told police that she had asked Tiedt for a divorce about a month ago, and hadn't been feeling well lately.

"In recent weeks her blood pressure has been up and down, she's had low energy, her vision has been getting blurry, and [she's] been having diarrhea," the complaint notes.

Tiedt could serve nearly ten years in prison if convicted of all charges.
