MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee police say they're investigating the death of a young boy found partially burned in a south side home.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene in the 1700 block of W. Grant St. shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters responded as well.

At about noon, police say they arrested a 23-year-old woman who is a family member of the child.

"I don’t know what the world is coming to," said Latonya Peterson, who says her cousin lives in the upper unit of the home. Police responded to the lower unit.

She said she rushed over after her cousin called her to say there was a fire.

"She smelled something burning, there was smoke coming out of her vents, black smoke so she called 911 immediately," Peterson said.

She said she didn't know the woman who lived below her cousin but did see a young boy on occasion. She guessed he was around 2 or 3 years old, though police have not yet released his age and say his identity is still being confirmed.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's office says an autopsy will be performed Friday to determine the cause of death.
