MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee firefighters have rescued a raptor researcher who was dangling in a safety harness from a tree branch about 40 feet off the ground.

Deputy Milwaukee Fire Chief Sean Slowey says the Stevens Point man fell off a tree near a Cooper's hawk nest on Sunday. The federally licensed researcher was attaching identification bands to four recently born chicks when he fell.

Slowey tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the man was suspended from a branch and holding two hawk chicks when the fire crew arrived with a ladder truck just after noon.

The ladder with a bucket was extended into the tree, and the researcher and chicks were lowered safely to the ground. The ladder was then used to return the chicks to a branch close to the nest.
