Beans & Barley, a staple of Milwaukee's East Side, is planning to open a second location in Mequon at the town's new Public Market expected to open this fall.

It is one of 10 vendors scheduled to be in the location, 6400 W. Mequon Rd., joining Purple Door, Anodyne Coffee Roasting and others.

This is Beans & Barley's first expansion since opening their doors in 1973 as a small neighborhood health-food store under the management of Mike Stevens.

Stevens moved to California, and the shop has gone through a variety of owners before falling into the hands of James Neumeyer and Polly Kaplan.

"Beans & Barley has always been about fresh food, made from scratch but it is really so much more," Kaplan said. "It is a community of customers and employees who are invested in seeing 'their place' thrive. We have survived fires, corporate competition and sink holes all because we care about the food we serve and the friends we make. We are really looking forward to working with the other vendors in the Market Place."

Outside of the 10 restaurants, Spur 16, the new Mequon town center, will include 145 apartments and 10 townhouses. The entire project is being spearheaded by developer Cindy Shaffer.

The entire project is planned to finish up sometime next summer, with St. Paul's Fish Market, an oyster bar and sit-down eatery, also in the works.
