Milwaukee- The miniature replica Eiffel Tower stands in the middle of Milwaukee's Bastille Days with a black cloth draped on top, a candle underneath and flowers at it's base.
"It's just hard. We're out having a great time at a festival like this and you think of people in another country that were trying to do the same thing and you just can't imagine what it's like to go through something like that," explained Neil Swendrowski, Franklin.
A moment of silence for those who lost their lives in Nice stirs emotions.
"This is the biggest Bastille Days festival in North America ... everybody in the world could be flying a black flag for us right now. I take this very personally," said Jeanette Watts,of Ohio.
Across the street at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, people stopped in to pray for peace, but festival goers say the party must go on.
The twinkling lights on the Eiffel Tower will stay off the remainder of the festival as a reminder.
