Bringing home the bacon could be getting more expensive.According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the nation's bacon reserves are at a 59-year low.

At Ray’s Butcher Shoppe in Greenfield, Bacon prices are sizzling right now. The meat market is selling more bacon than ever, about 25 cases a week.

"Everybody loves bacon! Bacon for breakfast, you can put bacon on burgers," said Perry Podd, co-owner of Ray's Butcher Shoppe.

Everyone loves bacon so much, the demand for the breakfast meat is outpacing the supply. According to the USDA, pig farmers just can't keep up with the world's appetite.

"I found out the price of bacon has shot up 25 percent, my cost," Podd said. "We're going to try and keep the price pretty consistent for the customers. We'll keep it as tight as we can, but if we have to raise it, we may have to raise it a little bit."

Over at Miss Katie’s Diner at 19th and Clybourn Streets, the demand for bacon is sky high.

The breakfast spot makes several pounds of bacon every morning and right now, the diner isn't changing the price on their menu.

In fact, the waitresses here say customers don't need to hog all the bacon, there's plenty to go around.

"This will pass too. I remember when eggs went up really high. It will all come back down. It will all even itself out. I'm not worried about it,” said Denise Maultra.

Podd said a pound of bacon may cost a little more as winter wears on, but prices should stabilize by summer.
