MANITOWOC — The Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department has asked the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department for help investigating the death of an inmate at the Manitowoc County Jail.
Deputies say the inmate was found dead in his cell Tuesday around 7:49 a.m. A correctional officer was conducting routine rounds when he noticed an inmate lying awkwardly on his bed.
The officer entered the cell and discovered the inmate was unresponsive, so he began life-saving measures. Paramedics arrived from the Manitowoc Fire Department. However, all life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
Following the incident, the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department reached out to Sheboygan County for help.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department said in a release that outside agencies are often requested to assist when deaths occur in correctional facilities.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department is now heading the investigation. Deputies are not releasing the name of the inmate at this time.
