SUSSEX -- A man is in custody after holding four children and his girlfriend hostage inside their Sussex home Thursday morning.

Neighbors that live near Ivy Avenue and Pewaukee Road tell TODAY'S TMJ4 they were woken up by gunshots just before 6 a.m.

"Just really loud bangs. There were three to four shots that we heard," neighbor Robyn Fenwick said.

The woman who was inside with the children told deputies that her boyfriend, 40, was intoxicated and shot off multiple rounds from a handgun inside and outside of the house.

Neighbors in the area were evacuated after several attempts were made to contact the suspect with negative results.

After two hours, a SWAT team was able to rescue everyone inside the house. The male suspect was taken into custody and was later taken to the hospital to for minor lacerations.

"It's always concerning," said Jennifer Wallschlaeger with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. "We're in the business of saving lives. That's what we want to do as quickly as possible."

The reason for the shooting has not been determined.
