Appleton officer, bystander shot during arrest

Appleton Police say an officer and a bystander were shot and a gas station robbery suspect was fatally wounded early Saturday morning.

Police say it started when a man stole merchandise from a Mobil gas station on Newberry Street shortly after 10:30 p.m Friday and fled on foot.

A little after midnight, a man matching the description robbed a MotoMart gas station on South Kensington Drive and again ran from the scene.

  • An Appleton Police officer spotted a man matching the suspect’s description at around 12:16 a.m. on Kensington Drive and attempted to arrest him. During a struggle, the officer was shot by the suspect, according to police.

    Two men in a passing car stopped to help the officer, and one of those men was also shot during the altercation.

    The suspect was shot and killed in the struggle, although the news release issued by police did not say who shot him.

    The officer's injury isn't life-threatening. The bystander's condition wasn't released.

    Green Bay Police are investigating at the Appleton department's request.
