Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt threw his hat in the ring to replace former Sheriff David Clarke full time. Gov. Walker will make the appointment.
Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt wants to become Interim Sheriff.
Schmidt took over the Sheriff's Office earlier in September following the surprise resignation of David Clarke.
"I very respectfully request that I be allowed to continue what we have started over these last 25 days in this organization," Schmidt said at a Monday news conference.
Schmidt has started saturation patrols to stop reckless driving on the freeways. He reports that 588 speeding tickets have been issued in the last 19 days.
Governor Scott Walker will select an Interim Sheriff once the deadline application passes on September 27. The position will be up for regular election in 2018.
