SHEBOYGAN — An elderly man remains in critical condition after he was hit by a van while leaving church Thursday night.

Sheboygan Police said the 89-year-old man was struck around 9:00 p.m. near 6th Street and New York Avenue. He was airlifted to Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee.

"The vehicle had come down south on 6th Street. As he was just finishing crossing the street he was struck by the vehicle," said Sheboygan Police Sergeant Ryan Schmitt.

"As soon as he struck the person he stopped immediately and remained on scene," Schmitt added.

A viewer sent TODAY'S TMJ4 video that showed a Cousins Subs van near where the man was hit. A company spokesperson says they are aware of the incident and are cooperating with authorities.

It is not clear what caused the crash or whether the 89-year-old used a crosswalk. Police say they are still investigating all of the contributing factors.

Police have not identified the pedestrian or driver.

"That’s super unfortunate and terrible," said Craig Grabhorn, who walks around the neighborhood often. He says he usually feels safe.

"There are street lights that kind of help out, but in a lot of spots there are dark spots so there’s opportunity especially if people sometimes tend to not use a crosswalk or something like that too maybe they will be missed and not seen," said Grabhorn.

Police are talking with witnesses and reviewing a security video. At this time no citations have been issued.
