MILWAUKEE -- Two 10-month-old twins have been found safe after a suspect stole a vehicle while they were in the back seat.
Family and neighbors are relieved after an hour of fearing the worst.
Around 3 p.m. Saturday a loud scream echoed down 49th Street near Concordia Avenue. Neighbor Jerel Washington ran over to the home where the noise was coming from.
"I came to the door and she says my kids are gone, my kids are gone," Washington said.
Milwaukee police said the woman parked her vehicle on the street, left it running and went into a house for a brief period of time. During that time a suspect took the vehicle, which had the woman's 10-month old twins inside.
"She said get on Facebook and tell everybody can you do something because it’s a Dodge Journey," Washington said.
Police said the car was found an hour later, about two miles away, in an alley near 40th Street and North Avenue.
"I was playing basketball and that’s when my ball hit the car of the stolen vehicle, and I went looking inside and that’s when I seen some babies," Jaylin Lowe said.
Not knowing what to do, Lowe ran inside to tell a friend's mom.
"What do you mean babies?" Marquetta Treadway told him.
Treadway said she ran outside, called police and sure enough the twins were in the back seat of the Dodge Journey.
"The little boy was asleep so that’s what made me open the door because I saw him slouched over, but he was asleep," Treadway said. "The little girl was looking at me like what was going on?"
Police arrived and found the car, but the suspects were gone by then. Treadway is left astonished someone could put babies in such harm.
"People have no compassion," she said. "I mean he looked in there, I’m quite sure he saw the kids when he took off with it, why not leave it?"
The twins are back with their family after a precautionary trip to the hospital. Police are still searching for suspects.
