Shorewood police say a 17-year-old is in custody for making a threat to Shorewood High School over a controversial play.

The production of “To Kill A Mockingbird” was canceled and debated for days over the use of the N-word in the play.

Cast members in the play were surprised by the strong reaction the play received.

“I think it was a nerve we weren’t necessarily expecting to hit,” said Will Aldana.

Aldana was going to play Atticus Finch.

“We first would have liked to get the message out to the community and we’re sad we don’t get to do that through our art,” said Aldana.

Police said they were notified of the threat at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The 17-year-old male suspect was arrested Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Charges will be recommended to the Milwaukee County District Attorney and the suspect is being held at the Milwaukee County Jail.
