MILWAUKEE -- Approximately 130 Joy Global employees will lose their jobs as their employer restructures its operations, the manufacturing company announced Wednesday.

Joy Global says it's shutting down its heavy fabrication and welding department in Milwaukee. Those operations had already been placed on "temporary idling," and the company says "the majority" of the affected 130 employees were already on layoff.

Employees will get severance packages or bargained benefits as applicable, it said.

"This change will not affect the quality of Joy Global's products or its ability to produce them," a statement from the company reads. "The functions previously handled by the Milwaukee heavy fabrication and welding departments will be covered by other Joy Global manufacturing and service facilities, and alliance partners."

The rest of the company's Milwaukee-area operations are not affected.
