In 2018, one in four tobacco retailers in Milwaukee sold nicotine and tobacco products to minors during compliance checks.

Compliance checks consist of minors going into retailers and asking for tobacco products. If they are sold to them, police officers will go in and give a ticket to the retailers or they can choose to sign up for a program to avoid citation.

Here are the sales, according to the study completed by Wisconsin Wins, by the numbers:

  • Two e-cigarettes sold out of 30 attempts
  • Zero single cigarettes out of 12 attempts
  • Zero cigarette packs out of four attempts
  • 118 flavored cigarillos out of 441 attempts

The 25% rate is an increase from the 2017 number of 19%. Despite the increase in sales, 81% of retailers still checked ID before the transaction.
