These days most of us shop online, but beware, that discount you find may be too good to be true. A new study from the Better Business Bureau says counterfeiting is becoming more frequent.

The study reveals that one in four people buy items online that are counterfeit. They can be anything from designer shoes to sports team apparel, electronics and even cosmetics, some of which could actually be harmful and dangerous.

According to the BBB, the U.S. economy loses more than $200 billion, and more than 700,000 jobs every year as a result of counterfeiting. It's also the most common complaint the organization hears about here in Wisconsin.

You can avoid becoming a victim by making sure to do your research, and don't just believe reviews you see and look at the retailer's website.

"Look and see is there an address? Is there a phone number? Can you Google that address? What does the map show you? Is it a real place or not? Also look for fuzzy images or typos," BBB Wisconsin CEO Jim Temmer said.

If you think you've purchased a counterfeit product, call your credit card company or the retailer immediately.
