Iowa Latino festival cancelled following Mollie Tibbetts' death

Posted

An Iowa town has canceled their Latino heritage festival following the death of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts by an undocumented immigrant.

"Hispanic United for Perry" was supposed to be held this past weekend in Perry, Iowa but was canceled in fear of possible unrest from anti-immigration protestors.

One HUP organizer spoke with WHO-TV in Iowa about the cancellation.

"We felt that it was not the right time for a community celebration," he said.

A pro-immigration group, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, also spoke with WHO-TV and held a 'United Rally' in place of the festival in order to calm the tensions of the immigration debate.

"The message of the rally is the title of the rally peace, love and unity," organizer TJ Maylum said. "This is a tight knit community and our neighbors are blended, and when one neighbor is hurting it really hurts us all."
