MISHICOT, Wis. -- A four-foot ball python escaped from an apartment in Mishicot and attacked a poodle early Monday morning, according to Manitowoc County sheriff's deputies.

Deputies were called to an apartment building in the 500 block of S. Main St. just after 2:00 a.m. Monday. Tenants said they had heard a dog yelping. When they went to investigate, they found the snake latched onto the dog's ear, and coiled around its body.

A resident reportedly threw the snake out of the apartment, and officers were unable to locate it. It's believed to be at large as of Monday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to call the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department.

Ball pythons are not venomous. They usually feed on small mammals such as rats, mice, and shrews.
