WEST ALLIS — Crowds ventured to the Wisconsin State Fair to enjoy a slice of summer, along with the food, rides and farm animals.

As kid after kid raved about the Ferris wheel, adults agreed something else draws them in.

"I mean, we come down for the rides for the kids and the animals, of course, but the food is the main thing," said Matt Wacholtz of Waukesha.

Everywhere you looked, people were indulging. Many of them count on the State Fair to expand their palate. Each year vendors boast new dishes.

This year, new food items include deep-fried milk with cookie dip, bug tacos, BBQ mac tater tots and blazing jalapeno deep-fried olives.

You can find the bug tacos at Exotic Meat Grill. People who looked past the bugs and dove in were not disappointed. The manager, known as Mr. Jerky, said by 1 p.m. Thursday they had sold more than 50.

"We have larva worms in there and also crickets that are dehydrated. So we rehydrate them and then we sauté them in a taco seasoning and make them taste like a traditional taco," said Mr. Jerky.

"Some people are scared by them. Other people are like, 'Bring it on, let’s try it out.' You don’t come to the fair to eat plain, old boring food. You come here to eat something different."
