Weekend Events: August in the 414

Posted

We're nearing the middle of August but summer festivals are still plentiful in Milwaukee. Here's what's going on this weekend.

They're "canoes on steroids." The Milwaukee Dragon Boat Festival is on Saturday at Lakeshore State Park. Dragon boat races begin at 8 a.m. Teams of 21 men and women will row the 43-foot-long boats to the beat of their drummer. After the races, guests can indulge in Chinese culture through dance, music, food and more.

Head over to Greendale any time this weekend for Greendale Village Days. This event is sure to please everyone with food vendors, games, rides, an outdoor movie theater and more.

Bronzeville Week continues! The week-long celebration of Milwaukee heritage is coming to an end on Saturday. Be sure to hit up the Young Professionals Trivia Night on Friday and the Black Food Truck Fest and bike ride on Saturday before the festivities are over.

The first ever Cream City Classic open river swim is on Saturday. Swimmers will race along the Milwaukee River starting at 8 a.m. at the intersection of N. Jackson St. and E. Erie St. The swim is a celebration of the water improvements Milwaukee has been making to the Milwaukee River.

Lastly, the Glendale Chalk Art Festival is on Sunday at the Glendale Market Center. There will be locally known chalk artists as well as student artists, food and music. All proceeds go toward funding for a K-9 officer for the local police department after the retirement of Boomer, the station's previous K-9 officer.
