A spectacular night down in Milwaukee’s lakefront as people celebrate the 4th of July with the big fireworks show.

People have been camping out in Veterans Park since Monday morning to save their spots. But families say the reason behind their effort is about much more than just great seats for the show.

Klint Knueppel and his family have been camping out for more than 25 years.

“There are eight families coming together for this,” said Knueppel.

The Knueppel family started the tradition with just 5 guys. Now they have more than 100 people out from all generations. The youngest is 7-months-old. The oldest is 82.

It’s the same at longtime Milwaukee resident Hermine Jackson’s tent. This great-grandmother has been camping out for more than 12 years to serve up food for family.

“I’m making barbecue wings. And the secret is the is, I can’t tell you my secret,” Jackson said as she mans her grill.

Even though many families have been staking spots on the lake for years, the Soto family decided to try their hand at it for the first time.

They say they realize this time together, just hanging out and playing cards, are what makes it worth it!

“This is awesome. I love this actually,” said Anacelli Soto.
