When we buy homeowners insurance, our agent and insurer usually do a good job of making sure that we are adequately covered.
This is based on the information that we provide about the home, our personal property, who is living there and how we will use the property. But, as time goes on, we may acquire more valuables, add an addition, get a dog or use the home as part of a home-based business.
These are all situations that our agent or insurer may not know about but could require additional coverage. In some situations, you may learn that you need to take extra precautions that may not be covered under your homeowners insurance.
And, if you have been claim-free for many years or have taken extra measures to protect your home, such as installing an alarm system, this information might help lower your premium. If it has been a while, now would be a good time to schedule a review and update coverage. Do not wait until something bad happens to check things out.
