There are a number of legal situations for which you may need to hire an attorney.
But, not knowing who or when to hire, the type of service to expect, and the cost can lead to problems later. If you need to hire an attorney, here are a few things that you might want to do:
Before you make an appointment, get some referrals and check things out.
Make sure that the attorney is experienced in your type of legal situation, and that you understand their services and fee structure. It might also be a good idea to check out their background to see if any disciplinary actions have been brought against them.
In your initial appointment, explain your situation, and ask about your rights and how laws, legal procedures, or any other issues may affect your case.
Also, ask about how you will be charged for their services and get this information in writing.
If you are not comfortable with the attorney or have additional concerns, do not agree to further services until you check out other legal sources. The State Bar of Wisconsin can be a great resource for learning more about hiring an attorney, how to resolve things on your own, and how to get help if things do not go well.
