Starting Oct. 1, 2016, it will be illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving through a construction zone in Wisconsin.

The law is part of ongoing efforts to reduce distracted driving and increase safety throughout the state.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Wisconsin is one of 14 states with a full or partial ban cell phones while driving.

The law does grant an exception for drivers calling 911 and those using hands-free/Bluetooth devices.

Drivers caught violating the law can face fines of up to $40 on a first offense and $100 for subsequent offenses.
