A Waukesha veteran who claimed he was ambushed and beaten by four men last week has admitted to police he made the incident up to cover for a bicycle accident.

Robert George is now facing a misdemeanor charge for obstruction of justice after giving a false statement to police. George says it was a lie that snowballed out of his control.

"I’m sorry for lying to you," he said. "I made a really stupid mistake and I'm sure I'll be paying for it for a little while to come."
Last week, George told his family, police and hospital staff that he was viciously attacked on a bike ride home.

"It was just a straight beat down," he said last Friday.

TODAY'S TMJ4 shared his storyout of concern for public safety.

"I was getting hit from all sides, my back, here, shoulder," George said last Friday.

A family member set up a GoFundMe page that raised more than 3-thousand dollar and several dentists offered to fix his teeth for free.

"I really didn't know how to back out of it at that point,” said George.

After days of investigating and retracing George’s story, Captain Dan Baumann said police confirmed the allegations did not add up.

"When given an opportunity to confront this and come clean, he was able to let us know that he lied about this," said Baumann.
Baumann said George broke down Tuesday and shared what really happened.

"That he was highly intoxicated, he was riding his bike down a road and ran into the back of a parked car," said Baumann.

George said he apologizes to all the people he hurt and accepts the consequences to come.

"I might have done something terrible right now, but I'm not a terrible person," he said.

GoFundMe has a policy that whenever a fundraising page is flagged as a fraudulent, everyone who donated will be fully reimbursed. The dentists who also reached out to help have been contacted by police.
