MILWAUKEE -- A Cousin's Subs employee fired shots at an armed robber in Milwaukee Monday afternoon, according to police.

The employee followed the robbers outside, and fired shots, according to a written statement from Cousin's Subs condemning the employee's reaction.

"The employee acted contrary to our policy, which states that all staff are prohibited from having possession of a weapon while on company property or while on company business," company officials tell TODAY'S TMJ4.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. at the restaurant located on 76th and Burleigh Streets.

Milwaukee police said two suspects came into the restaurant, pointed a gun at employees, stole money from the safe and fled.

The suspects were not hit and are still on the loose.

"A nearby business owner tells TODAY'S TMJ4 he heard several gun shots. He said it doesn't surprise him or scare him, but does worry him. The man said this is they type of activity that keeps "good people" from patronizing businesses in the area.

Milwaukee Police said this is the third robbery at the 76 & Burleigh Cousins Subs location. They were also robbed in June and November 2015.

The employee will be ordered into the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office for Endangering Safety by Use of a Dangerous Weapon, according to police.
