Milwaukee police found a dead woman in northwest side home Wednesday.

The Milwaukee Police Tactical Enforcement Unit was called to the Brentwood Avenue home to look for a child abuse suspect. Police say a 5-year-old had been hospitalized, and they had word the man responsible was inside and armed with a gun.

When police did go in the door they found a woman dead.

Nicole Zaffke had just gotten home from running errands Wednesday afternoon and pulled back her curtains to see police all around her home, their guns out moving towards her neighbor's house.

"They had their guns out pulled towards the house," Zaffke said. "There were two more officers that had rifles and they had their guns drawn."

Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she thought she heard a gunshot around 1:30 a.m., but she never called the police.

Neighbors said the man who lives in the home is relatively new to the street, and they had not heard anything to suggest he was hurting anyone inside the home.

"He does not seem like that type of a man. He seemed like he loved his son," Zaffke said. "They were always smiling and laughing."

Police arrested the 49-year-old man in Racine County.

"You never know," said Katrina Moore, who was watching the police work. "Behind closed doors."

Police say the 49-year-old man is a suspect in the child abuse and homicide cases.
