A tractor-trailer fire allowed cattle to get loose on a stretch of US Highway 151 near County Road C Wednesday afternoon in Dodge County.

Twenty-seven cows were on the truck and one of them died. The truck driver tells TODAY’S TMJ4 it was a freak accident.

About six cows got loose, and they shut down all lanes while running for their lives. Beaver Dam Fire Chief Alan Mannel said it was a tough to gather them all since some ran far away.

"It was pretty chaotic at first. The cows obviously weren't very happy about the fire,” Mannel said. “We were able to get the fire knocked down and get some of the cows out before they perished as well. It was a little labor intensive, obviously the cows weren't very happy about being re-corralled."

But with the help of local farmers on ATVs and the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, all the cows are now accounted for and will be relocated.

"It's actually very inspiring to see how the community and farmers came together to help with the situation," Mannel said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. All lanes are back open.
