WAUKESHA — One person is dead after a fire in the 600 block of South University Drive about 5:05 a.m. Thursday, according to a report by the Waukesha Police Department.

The medical examiner was called to the scene.

This is an active investigation.

Upon arrival, firefighters found an active fire with heavy smoke from a single-family house. Fire crews extinguished the fire and located a victim within eight minutes of arrival, according to the Waukesha Police Department.

The house sits along University Drive.

"Sometimes, you gotta learn to lean in and give them a hug and tell them we're going to be there for them," said Captain Dan Baumann of the Waukesha Police Department.

Much of the victim's family didn't want to speak on camera, but neighbors told TODAY'S TMJ4 they were shocked by Thursday's news.

"I've been here for about nine years and I haven't heard of this before. It's new to me," said Linnea Lewis.

Waukesha Police said they believe the fire broke out in the back of the home. It's unclear what caused the fire. Officials have not identified the victim.
