A driver turned himself in to authorities following a fatal crash on the city's north side Wednesday evening.

It happened near the intersection of Hopkins and Chambers Streets at around 8:30 p.m.

Police say the 50-year-old man walked out into traffic from between parked cars and was hit by a van.

Bystanders carried the victim into a nearby store, but were unable to save him.

Ricky Bond, owner of White's Barbershop, saw what happened on surveillance video.

"It was sad to see that man get injured like that and him carried off and him die because of the car accident," said Bond.

Bond believes the driver going to the police station was the right thing to do.

"In my opinion the best thing for him to do was to go straight to the police station because he didn't know the outcome of what was going to happen if he had pulled over," he said.

The driver of the van told officers he feared for his safety at the scene, so drove to District 5 headquarters and is cooperating with police.
