WISCONSIN — Hi everybody! Today we are going to be making a homemade lava lamp.

For this experiment, you are going to need some water, vegetable oil, a glass, some Alka-Seltzer and some food coloring.

First, fill your glass halfway with some water then pour in the oil into the glass but do not fill the glass to the top.

The oil and water will separate because the oil is less dense than the water. The oil will also float to the top of the glass because oil and water can not form a chemical bond.

Once the oil has floated to the top, place 6-10 drops of food coloring into the glass.

Next, drop one tablet of Alka-Seltzer into a glass and watch the magic of your lava lamp take shape.

The Alka-Seltzer creates bubbles, releasing carbon dioxide giving you your homemade lava lamp.
