Uber is testing a new app that matches temporary workers with job opportunities

If you don’t have a full-time job and are looking for temporary work here and there, Uber is hoping to help out with the launch of a brand-new app.

Called Uber Works , the app aims to connect workers with businesses looking for some short-term help.

Here’s how it works: Businesses will use the app to post listings for short-term or temporary jobs, mainly in the realm of restaurant/catering work, cleaning and warehouse jobs, and general manual labor gigs.

Workers can then browse through jobs with information about pay, job location, required skills and even required attire .

Uber will conduct background checks and skills assessment for each worker on the app. Once a worker is connected with a job, they can even track their hours right in the app, allowing users to clock in and out and log breaks.

“We believe that finding work shouldn’t have to be a job in itself,” Uber wrote in a blog post . “For positions as diverse as being a prep cook, warehouse worker, a commercial cleaner or event staff, Uber Works aims to make it easier to find and claim a shift.”

Uber has partnered with staffing agencies like TrueBlue to handle workers’ pay and benefits, and are working to expand their educational partnership with Arizona State University so eligible workers can have access to online classes. They’re also working with local Chicago organizations that can provide skills training.

“We believe technology can help workers feel more confident and empowered when it comes to finding shifts, and we are excited by the potential to build technology that can reduce the pain points workers experience each day,” Uber wrote in the blog post.

Right now, the app is only available in Chicago, but it may eventually launch elsewhere, so keep an eye out for it if you’re in the market for temporary work.
