MILWAUKEE — A new resolution in Milwaukee could require police to provide people with business cards whenever they interact with someone.

Alderwoman Chantia Lewis has drafted this piece of legislation that went before the Milwaukee Common Council on Tuesday.

The legislation would urge the Fire and Police Commission to make MPD officers carry business cards on them at all times to hand out when encountering with groups or individuals while on duty.

“In an attempt to help foster an atmosphere of trust and cooperation, I am introducing this resolution to promote transparency and accountability from the police,” Alderwoman Lewis said. “There is a greater need for police oversight and accountability in light of the global, racial-justice protest movement that has risen in response to the deaths of Dontre Hamilton, Sylville Smith, Joel Acevedo, George Floyd, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and other unarmed Black (and brown) men, and taking away police anonymity will be a positive advancement in protecting Americans and their constitutional rights.”
