MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele is calling for Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke to resign from his position as Sheriff.

In a statement issued Sunday night, Abele says he is happy Clarke will not be taking in the job with the Department of Homeland Security and added DHS can find a better candidate for the position. Abele has argued Milwaukee County can find better candidate for Sheriff

Read Abele's full statement below:
"While I never believed that anyone who actually knows and cares about national security would consider David Clarke for any position of authority, I'm happy for the confirmation that they weren't. Homeland Security has an opportunity to do far better. I'm hoping Milwaukee County will get the same. I urge Sheriff Clarke to submit his resignation and allow Milwaukee to turn the page. I am sure Governor Walker will appoint a good successor and I look forward to working with whomever that is."

Clarke also sent out a terse response Sunday claiming Abele is upset Clarke will be Sheriff for another two years.

Read Clarke's full statement below:
"Abele is pissed i will be sheriff until January 2019 at a minimum. That's a long time. He couldn't beat me at the ballot box in 2013 after spending $263,000 of his personal wealth trying to do it. I will resign right after that little mouse does."

Abele and Clarke have been at odds over the years for situations as major as the salaries of sheriff’s deputies and as minor as Clarke’s love for the Dallas Cowboys.
