Great Wolf Lodge may soon replace KeyLime Cove in Gurnee

The village of Gurnee approved plan for renovation

A new Great Wolf Lodge is in development and it's closer than you may think.

The village of Gurnee approved a tax revenue-sharing agreement with national resort chain Great Wolf Lodge.

It could soon take over Gurnee's KeyLime Cove Indoor Waterpark Resort, according to the village's Facebook page.

While the deal is not final yet, village officials hope to close on the sale by this spring. The space would close for a year to renovate the property with the hopes of opening in time for spring break 2018.

Redevelopment includes adding 20,000 square feet of new indoor water park space and additional shopping options, among other outdoor water park amenities.

NBC Chicago reports KeyLime Cove is "underperforming," allocating the village nearly $400,000 a year. The village's deal with Great Wolf would net more.

Great Wolf Lodge recently bought a water park and hotel across from the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. That development is expected to open next winter.

Great Wolf currently has 14 indoor water park resorts across the U.S. and Canada.
