What to do when items are damaged during shipping

If you are planning to ship some presents this holiday season, there are a few things that you might want to do to protect yourself just in case the items get lost or damaged during shipping.

In addition to asking questions and reading the shipping company’s policies and packing instructions, it is a good idea to pack things well, take a picture of the condition of the items and the box before you seal it, and keep copies of tracking information in a safe place. This information will be needed if the item gets lost or delayed during shipment.

If you are shipping items that are valued at over $100, it might also be a good idea to consider purchasing extra insurance that may be offered by the shipper for the value of the contents.

If the package or contents is damaged, have the recipient take pictures of the box and the contents. File a claim with the shipper and include pictures or other proof that you might have of the value of the items

Such as receipts or an appraisal. having copies of tracking information can also help the shipper to locate a missing package. If you purchased the item with a major credit card, you might also want to file a claim with the card issuer. Some credit card companies will provide coverage for a limited period of time for items that get lost or damaged within a few months of purchase.
