Here’s a great tip for the mileage mavens: Grabbing groceries at Walmart can net you United Airlines MileagePlus miles — just for completing an order!

The Money Saving Mom shared the sweet deal: You can use United’s MileagePlus X app to earn 450 miles off your Walmart grocery pickups. Yep, you read that right: 450 miles.

All you have to do is shop using the Walmart Grocery app and then swing by the store to get your stuff.

There is a bit of a process to it, though. First off, you have to sign up for United MileagePlus, of course. Once you’re a member, download the United MileagePlus X app and input your membership number.

Here’s the important part: Make sure you have the Walmart Grocery app, then open it by using the MileagePlus X app. (Search “Walmart Grocery” in MileagePlus, then click “continue to merchant app” to launch it.)

This will link the miles to your purchases. From there, you can click away your shopping list and set a time to pick up the order.

It’s crucial to note, too, that you must use the standalone Walmart Grocery app for your order. Purchases on Walmart.com or on the regular Walmart app won’t get you the 450 miles. You’d still get some miles per dollar spent, but you’ve got to shop on Grocery to catch the big tuna.

United is in the process of revamping its mileage structure, so at the moment there isn’t a firm number of miles you’ll need for free travel. But every little bit helps, right?

The MileagePlus X app is great in that regard. It’s a mileage-earning powerhouse: Dozens of major retailers offer miles through the program, and sometimes throw in a coupon code to boot.

There’s even a MileagePlus Dining option — members earn miles from going out to eat, at both national chains and local joints.

Happy shopping and safe landings!
