Waukesha County is wrapping up its part of Wisconsin's effort to recount its November 8 presidential election votes.

County Clerk Kathleen Novack said on Friday morning that ballots from approximately 50 of the county's 266 "reporting units" still had to be tallied.

She expected they would all be counted by Friday afternoon.
Novack said a high-speed tabulator the county rented for the recount effort was helping to speed up the process.

"When you take the amount of time it takes to hand feed a ballot, we timed it at about 5 seconds per ballot," Novack said. "The high speed (tabulator) will count 5-thousand ballots per hour."

Once all ballots are counted the county's Board of Canvassers certifies the results from each reporting unit before handing them off to the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

She was hopeful the whole process would be finished Friday.
The WEC has set a deadline of 8 p.m. Monday for the recount to be completed.

But Novack said the county did not want to take any chances with missing the deadline.

So if there's still work to be done after Friday night, she expected workers will return Saturday or Sunday.

The Clerk said the recount effort overall had gone "very smoothly" in Waukesha County.
