Members of Voces De La Frontera took their efforts to remove Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke from office directly to the governor.

In Madison Wednesday, the group delivered petitions with 10 thousand signatures urging Gov. Scott Walker to use his authority to remove Clarke from office.

The group’s Christine Nuemann Ortiz points to the jail death of Terrill Thomas as a reason Clarke must be removed from office.

“The man that just recently died of thirst was essentially tortured and if we are gonna uphold human rights internationally, it starts at home, it starts in our local jails and if someone murders someone, tortures someone, you  bet,” Ortiz said.

Walker has responded to calls  to fire the sheriff by saying it was up to the voters in Milwaukee County.

In addition, Voces members met with state legislators urging them to block a bill designed to force local government and law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
